Our immune systems are affected by so many different factors—including how we're fueling our bodies, and what chemicals we’re exposing them to on a regular basis.

In our house, we tend to spend a lot more time supporting our immune systems in times of health (or early sickness) than we do treating big sickness.

But from time to time, someone will come home from school with a sniffle or a cough, and before those germs have really settled in and made their way through our whole house, this is the first thing I do.

Thieves tea.

Did you know this oil blend was named after a group of thieves who operated during the bubonic plague in 14th century Europe? They were perfume and spice merchants who lost their livelihoods because of the plague. These thieves robbed the dead and dying, while wearing masks that contained a combination of herbs, spices and oils found in Thieves oil today. Though their targets were highly contagious, they did not contract the disease. When at last they were caught and the judge asked how they managed to escape the plague, they explained that the herbs and spices they wore kept them safe from infection.

Thieves oil is a favorite in our home. It’s primarily made of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus radiata, and Rosemary, ingredients that are known for having anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties.

For Thieves tea, you will need:

To begin, unwrap a Thieves lozenge, place it in a mug, and pour boiling water over it. Within a few minutes (and usually a few stirs when you add the honey), the lozenge will have fully dissolved and you’ll be left with a warm mug of immune-boosting tea.

I finish off the mug a few different ways, depending on what germs we’re fighting.

For basic immune-boosting, I’ll stir in a bit of local honey and serve. If we have some stronger germs at play, I’ll add trace minerals and mineral essence along with the honey. And if I’m treating a specific child who is dealing with something stronger, or something I suspect may be more bacterial in nature, I’ll also add some colloidal silver. Thankfully, Thieves has a bold flavor and easily covers the additives.

Ps. In our house, Thieves tea is kid-approved. They love it!
